According to the University of Navarra, mental block is defined as “difficulty for psychic processes (attention, memory, thoughts, etc.) to evolve normally, especially the impossibility to remember data or facts that produce anxiety”.
HOW TO IDENTIFY MENTAL BLOCKS?
How can we identify the existence of millions of blocks and with different origins. The important thing in this case is to identify them and not let that thought of stiffness, lack of coordination or mobility, etc, prevent you from learning to dance. It is clear that each person has a different body, mind and methodology of learning and adaptation. But the basis of this, is to identify the part of my body that has less mobility or physical activities that I find more difficult, in order to focus on working on it.
TIPS TO DESACTIVATE STIFFNESS AND PROMOTE COORDINATION
You must keep in mind that the body is trained, cared for and a process is acquired in each person individually; for any practice or physical activity. Here are some tips that can help you to desactivate that stiffness and lack of coordination to start dancing:
- Identify which are those parts of the body, which are more difficult to move and those try all possible forms of movement. I know you will feel weird, but that’s what it’s all about, because you are not used to do it. Tip I give you, do it with different types of music, as you know there are different speeds, and surely you will discover a new movement in this practice.
- Record yourself with your eyes closed dancing to your favorite music. Do it alone at home in front of a mirror, you will feel more comfortable, without any pressure around you. You will realize that when you watch the video, your mind will start to think and judge, but remember to be gentle with yourself, it is a process, and let’s not encourage our worst enemy, ourselves! Let’s turn it into our best friend.
- Start with short and simple sequences, coordination is acquired with repetition. It is the basis of any discipline, even if you think you are already at a higher level, because “you already know the basic steps”, speed, agility and coordination are mastered by practicing the basics of any activity.’
- Participate in socials in which you go with two premises in your mind. First, you will not be the star dancer because, in fact, the objective of the social is to enjoy yourself. So take the time to feel the atmosphere of the event and observe a lot of how people connect and dance. Second, remember that everyone you see dancing great, started out like you at some point and the least they are going to do is judge you. In the end, socials are events to share energy, learn from our mistakes and enjoy the music that motivates us to dance.
SALSA AS A TOOL TO UNBLOCK YOUR MIND
These are some of the most common impediments to starting to dance. The list is endless, but the base that we must work on before our physical body is to positively train our mind and follow that voice that tells you: how nice how they dance, I’m going to start dance classes! how well they dance salsa, if I start taking salsa classes now, I can enjoy later events and meet new people, I like this environment!
Always give yourself the opportunity to explore and don’t let yourself be the first impediment to start your classes.
